Biographie
Daniel Airam, Contemporary Painting and Engraving | Galerie Le Cube Vernet
Engraver, painter, sculptor and video artist, Daniel Airam is presented by Galerie Le Cube Vernet in Avignon. His work explores the image and the sign, between graffiti, Flemish portraiture and a fresh look at old painting.
From Printing to Engraving
Born in 1958 in Lyon, Daniel Airam studied graphic arts, then worked in the printing industry from 1975 to 1982. This experience shaped his relationship with the image and the sign. In 1982, he chose to devote himself exclusively to engraving and took part in numerous events in France and abroad.
A Multidisciplinary Artist
Little by little, painting, sculpture and video naturally joined his practice. A deep reflection on the image and the sign now lies at the heart of his concerns. Layering techniques and disciplines allows him to create compositions rich in texture and meaning, which question perception and collective memory.
From Graffiti to Flemish Portraiture
In his 2017 text "Incisions, crossed portraits", Daniel Airam says he is as amazed by the persistence of graffiti carved into the plaster of a wall or the bark of a tree as he is delighted by the immutable beauty of the Flemish portrait and its ocean of faces. In his view, both arise from a quasi-mechanical, codified system, tirelessly repeated, and carry the trace of thousands of anonymous lives. One claims popular roots, the other an assumed aristocracy, yet a shared memorial function brings them together.
Varnish, Coloured Dots and the Gaze
Openly placing art history at the heart of his work, Daniel Airam uses varnish, which brings shine and hardness to the painting. He refers to the famous "shine" Van Eyck spoke of, close to glass, to stained glass, or to a skin meant to protect an organic and fragile world.
Added to this is a proliferation of coloured dots, through an equally mechanical process: the repetition of a simple, abstract motif. This coloured grid forces the eye to make an effort, and it is this gaze that activates the work.
An Internationally Exhibited Artist
Daniel Airam takes part in numerous group exhibitions in France, Europe, the United States and Japan.
