About the artwork: Portrait de femme by Daniel Airam
Portrait de femme by Daniel Airam: an original work by the artist, this painting depicts a young woman painted in the spirit of old master portraits, her head covered by a light-coloured headdress that falls over her shoulders, wearing a blue dress with an ornate neckline. A network of fine black lines, drawn like graffiti, covers her face and figure, like a veil that both hides and reveals. The background of horizontal stripes in blue, grey, pink and black sets this classical portrait in a resolutely contemporary language. About the artist:
“The persistence of graffiti and the immutable beauty of Flemish portraiture, both born from codified systems, celebrate singularity and share a common memorial function. The brilliance of painting, close to glass or skin, protects a fragile world while offering a space of creative tensions. Parietal art, wrapped in silence, remains a visual encounter of timeless power.”
Born in 1958 in Lyon, Daniel Airam first studied graphic arts before working in the printing industry from 1975 to 1982. From that date onward, he devoted himself entirely to engraving and participated in numerous exhibitions in France, across Europe, in the United States and in Japan.
Over time he incorporated painting, sculpture and video into his practice, expanding his means of expression. Today his work revolves around a reflection on image and sign, exploring their forms and meanings.
